Rovaniemi (RVN) is the main gateway: direct flights from Helsinki take just 1 hour 20 minutes. Finnair operates multiple daily flights.
Oulu (OUL) is a major hub with frequent Helsinki flights (1 hour). Good if you want city amenities before heading further north.
Kemi-Tornio (KEM) and Kuusamo (KAO) serve Kemi/SnowCastle and Ruka ski resort respectively.
The overnight Santa Claus Express train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi is a family adventure in itself: kids love sleeping on the train and waking up in Lapland.
International visitors: fly to Helsinki first, then connect to Lapland. In winter, some charter flights go direct from London, Paris, and other European cities.
Book flights 2-4 months ahead for best prices. Christmas season sells out early.
December (Christmas): Maximum magic. Snow, Santa, lights. Most crowded and expensive. Book 6+ months ahead.
January-February: Great snow, Northern Lights, fewer crowds than December. Cold (-15 to -30 C) but manageable with proper gear.
March-April: Longer days, still plenty of snow. Best for skiing. Warmer than midwinter. Less crowded, lower prices.
June-July: Midnight sun, 24-hour daylight. Hiking, berry picking, river activities. No snow but beautiful. Budget-friendly.
September-October: Autumn colours (ruska season). Northern Lights begin. Quiet and affordable. Good for nature-loving families.
Toddlers: March-April (warmer, more daylight) or summer. School-age kids: December for Santa magic. Teens: January-February for adventure sports.
Base layer: Merino wool or synthetic thermal underwear (top and bottom). This is the most important layer.
Middle layer: Fleece jacket and fleece pants. Keeps warmth in.
Outer layer: Waterproof, windproof winter jacket and snow pants. Insulated boots rated to -30 C.
Accessories: Wool hat that covers ears, neck gaiter or balaclava, two pairs of gloves (wool liners + waterproof mittens).
Feet: Thick wool socks (not cotton). Insulated winter boots, Kuoma or Sorel brands work well. Buy one size larger for thick socks.
You can rent full winter gear sets in Rovaniemi, Levi, and most resort areas for around 15-25 EUR/day per person. This is a great option if you do not want to buy everything.
Summer packing: layered clothing, rain jacket, mosquito repellent (essential in July), sun hat, and comfortable hiking shoes.
