Oulu is Finland's fifth largest city, located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. While technically not in Lapland, it is the most common gateway for families heading north. Many flights from Europe connect through Oulu, and it sits at the crossroads between southern Finland and the Arctic.
What makes Oulu worth more than a quick stopover is its family attractions, affordable prices (noticeably cheaper than Lapland resort towns), and genuine Finnish city atmosphere. A 1–2 day stop at the start or end of your Lapland trip works well.
Oulu is a university city with a young, international population. The city centre is walkable, well maintained and safe, so you can let older children explore independently without worry.
Tietomaa Science Centre (closed for renovation)
Tietomaa was Finland's first science centre, and it sits right in the city centre near the waterfront. One thing to know before you build a day around it: Tietomaa is currently closed for renovation and is due to reopen in late 2026 inside the new Tiima centre. Check its current status before you travel.
What it has been known for, and what the new centre is built around, is hands-on experiments with physics, biology and technology, a planetarium showing space films, a giant screen theatre, and rotating special exhibitions. Kids build, test, measure and experiment rather than read labels.
It has always worked particularly well for families with mixed-age children, because the areas are designed for different age groups, from toddler-friendly sensory spaces to physics experiments for teenagers.
Prices and opening hours for the reopened centre have not been published yet, so check the official site rather than any figure you read elsewhere. Whenever it opens, plan at least 2–3 hours: science-loving kids will want longer.
Oulu has the best shopping in the region, far more options than any Lapland town. Useful for families who need to pick up last-minute gear, kids' clothing, or supplies for the trip ahead.

Nallikari is Oulu's beach area, located about 5 km from the city centre. In summer, it is a proper sandy beach with shallow water that is safe for children. The beach has playgrounds, volleyball courts, and a seaside cafe.
The Nallikari Holiday Village offers cottages and camping, making it a budget-friendly accommodation option for families. It is particularly popular with Finnish families during summer months.
In winter, the adventurous can try ice swimming at Nallikari, where there is a maintained hole in the ice and a warm sauna beside it. Not for everyone, but older kids who are game for it will have a story to tell.
The Oulu Market Hall is a historic indoor market in the city centre. It sells local food products, Finnish specialities, souvenirs, and baked goods. Kids enjoy sampling the local treats: try the kalakukko (fish-filled bread) and fresh cloudberry pastries.
The outdoor market square next to the hall is also worth visiting, especially on Saturdays when local farmers sell fresh produce.
Located on an island about 14 km from Oulu, Turkansaari is a historical open-air museum showing what Finnish village life was like centuries ago. Traditional wooden buildings, farm animals, and costumed guides bring history to life.
Getting there is part of the fun: you take a short boat ride to the island. Open in summer months. Kids can try traditional crafts and see how bread was baked in wood-fired ovens.
Spending 1–2 days in Oulu at the beginning or end of your Lapland trip breaks up the journey, gives you access to better shopping and dining, and lets you experience a real Finnish city alongside the wilderness.
