Planning a family trip to Lapland from scratch can be overwhelming. We've done the work for you. These three itineraries cover different durations, seasons, and budgets, all paced for families with children. Pick one, adapt it to your own rhythm, and you're set.
Families with kids aged 3-10 who want the classic Santa experience
Fly into Rovaniemi Airport (direct flights from Helsinki, London, and other European cities). The airport is small and family-friendly, so you will be through baggage in 15 minutes.
Check into your hotel or holiday apartment. Settle in, unpack, and let kids rest from travel. Take a walk around Rovaniemi town centre: it is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Family dinner at a local restaurant. Try Nili or Roka for traditional Lappish food (reindeer, salmon, fresh bread). Kids' menus available. Walk along the Kemijoki river after dinner, beautiful in winter darkness.

Let kids decompress after travel. Don't over-schedule day one. If they have energy, Rovaniemi has an indoor playground at Lappsetparkki.

Head to Santa Claus Village (8 km north of city, taxi or bus #8). Meet Santa Claus in his office. There is no queue reservation, so arrive early (10 AM opening) to avoid the longest waits. Cross the Arctic Circle line: there is a painted line on the ground and a certificate you can buy.
Explore SantaPark (underground Christmas theme park, separate ticket). Send postcards from Santa's Post Office, which arrive with a special Arctic Circle postmark. Let kids play in the Snowman World ice playground. Shopping in the village gift shops.
Return to Rovaniemi. If weather and aurora forecast look good, join a 2-hour Northern Lights tour (departs ~8-9 PM). Even if you don't see the lights, the campfire with hot chocolate under the Arctic sky is magical.

Young kids (4-7) will be in absolute awe. Let them take their time with Santa, don't rush the moment. Older kids enjoy the activities and playground more than the Santa meeting.
Lunch at Santa's Salmon Place in the village (grilled salmon over open fire, surprisingly good). Dinner back in town.
Book a 2-hour morning husky safari (pick-up from hotel at 9 AM). Kids ride in the sled wrapped in blankets while a guide drives. Afterwards, cuddle with husky puppies at the kennel. Alternatively: visit a reindeer farm for feeding and a short sleigh ride.
Visit Arktikum museum, an excellent science centre about Arctic life, Northern Lights, and Sami culture. Interactive exhibits keep kids engaged. The building itself is striking, a long glass tube built partly underground. Allow 1.5-2 hours.
Transfer to airport for departure. Rovaniemi airport is only 10 minutes from town. If you have a late flight, squeeze in some souvenir shopping in town or visit Angry Birds Activity Park.

The husky puppy cuddle session is often the single best memory kids take home. Ask the guide if there are any newborn puppies to see.
Lunch at Arktikum cafe or grab a salmon soup at Kauppayhtiö before heading to the airport.
Families who want the complete Lapland experience: Santa, animals, snow castle, and icebreaker
Fly into Rovaniemi. Pick up rental car if driving (recommended for this itinerary) or arrange transfers.
Check into accommodation. A holiday apartment or cabin gives more space than a hotel for a 5-day stay. Stock up on groceries at K-Citymarket (large supermarket in town).
Easy first evening, explore Rovaniemi on foot, walk along the frozen river. Light dinner at a casual restaurant.

A rental car makes this itinerary much smoother. Finnish roads are well maintained in winter, and rental cars come with winter tyres fitted as standard.
