Ruka is in the Kuusamo region of northeastern Finland, about 25 km from Kuusamo Airport and just south of the official Lapland border, with the same snow and one of the longest ski seasons in the country. It is one of the few resorts in the Finnish north that works in both winter and summer, which makes it a year-round family destination.
The ski resort is set up with families in mind. Gentle slopes, ski schools, and a compact village layout mean parents do not need to worry about logistics. In summer, the same area becomes a hiking and mountain biking spot with Oulanka National Park right next door.
The Rosa & Rudolf Family Park is the heart of family skiing at Ruka. It features magic carpet lifts (conveyor belt lifts that are easy for small children to use), gentle slopes graded for beginners, and a dedicated area away from faster skiers.
The park is named after two mascot characters that kids meet around the resort. It includes a tubing hill, a snowman-building area, and warming huts where families can take breaks.
Children under 6 ski free at Ruka with a paying adult. This makes it one of the more affordable family skiing destinations in Scandinavia.
Ruka Ski School accepts children from age 3. Lessons are taught by instructors who specialise in working with young children. The approach is play-based: kids learn through games, not drills.
Group lessons run in the morning and afternoon. Private lessons can be booked for families who want more flexibility. Equipment rental is available on-site with proper fitting for children.
Most children aged 5–6 can ski independently on the easier slopes after 3–4 days of lessons. Instructors provide honest feedback about each child's progress.

Karhunkierros (Bear's Trail) for Families
The full Karhunkierros trail is 82 km and not for small children. But shorter sections are well-suited to families. The most popular family-friendly section is the Pieni Karhunkierros (Little Bear's Trail), a 12 km loop.
Even shorter walks of 2–5 km are possible, featuring suspension bridges, river gorge viewpoints, and the famous Myllykoski rapids. The scenery is striking: gorges with turquoise water flowing between canyon walls.
Ruka village is compact and has several family-friendly restaurants. On-slope restaurants serve lunch during ski days. The village centre has pizza, burgers, and Finnish options.

Kuusamo Airport (KAO) is just 25 km from Ruka village, about 20 minutes by car. Finnair operates direct flights from Helsinki year-round, with additional frequencies during ski season. The flight takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Airport transfers to Ruka are well-organised. Many accommodation providers include transfers, or you can book a shared shuttle. Renting a car gives you more flexibility to explore Oulanka and the surrounding area.
